The Roll-Up
A driver pays cash for fuel, the attendant keeps the pump running, and the next vehicle’s card gets billed for both fills. The cash from the first vehicle is quietly split between the cardholder, the pump attendant, and sometimes the cashier. The invoice looks completely normal.
Side-Fuelling
The tank gets filled to capacity on the company card, the driver siphons a portion straight back out, and sells it privately — then returns for a “top-up” fill days later that never should have been needed.
Ghost Kilometres
Reported distance travelled doesn’t match GPS-verified distance — created through odometer tampering, GPS jamming, or a falsified logbook — to make fuel-per-kilometre look reasonable on paper.
The Phantom Fill
A fuel card records a full purchase, but the tank-level sensor shows little or no actual increase — meaning the litres were paid for but never went in the tank.
Attendant Collusion
Driver and pump attendant work together at the forecourt itself, splitting the difference between what’s billed and what’s actually pumped.
Why This Bites Harder Right Now
South African diesel jumped roughly R7.51 per litre on 1 April 2026, and a fleet losing 50 litres a week to theft now costs itself around R65,000 a year per vehicle at prices above R26 a litre — up from roughly R47,000 when diesel sat closer to R18. The rate of theft doesn’t need to increase for the damage to get worse. The price does the rest.
Why The Tank Has To Talk Too
A card transaction tells you money moved. A sensor tells you fuel moved. Only one of those is the truth.
Here’s the mechanism, stripped of sales language: a fuel card is a financial instrument. It confirms a payment was authorised. It says nothing about how many litres physically entered a tank, whether the vehicle was even at that location, or whether the fuel stayed in the tank an hour later. Fuel theft in fleets is remarkably common — around 73% of fleets experience it, and 62% of that is internal — which means the honesty gap sits squarely between the card swipe and the dipstick.
Telematics closes that gap by giving you a second, independent witness: a capacitive or ultrasonic tank-level sensor that measures actual fuel volume, cross-referenced against GPS location and distance travelled.
