In South Africa, marked illuminating paraffin — the fuel sold legitimately for household heating and cooking, particularly in lower-income communities without reliable electricity access — carries none of the fuel tax and Road Accident Fund (RAF) levy that diesel does. This isn’t an oversight. It’s deliberate policy: illuminating paraffin serves a basic, essential domestic need, and taxing it at the same rate as commercial road-use diesel would place a real burden on households that depend on it for cooking and lighting.

That levy difference between the two products is substantial, and it is entirely legitimate when each product is used for its intended purpose.

As covered in our article on diesel fuel test methods, SARS adds a specific chemical marker — the A1 Marker — to all illuminating paraffin as a customs, excise, and VAT control measure. Because this marker is present in every litre of legitimately produced illuminating paraffin, its detection in a diesel sample is direct, unambiguous evidence that paraffin has been blended in. A1 Marker testing is one of the most reliable tools available for confirming that a diesel sample is genuine — and its absence from a supplier’s quality documentation should be treated as a meaningful red flag in its own right.
The Damage — Why “Dry” Fuel Grinds an Engine to Death
This isn’t a performance inconvenience. It’s a slow, mechanical execution of your engine’s most expensive components.
The core problem with paraffin as a diesel substitute isn’t just that it’s the wrong product — it’s that paraffin is fundamentally “dry” compared to genuine diesel. Diesel contains natural and added lubricity properties specifically because modern high-pressure fuel injection systems rely on the fuel itself to lubricate their internal moving parts. There is no separate oil circuit protecting the injectors and the high-pressure pump — the fuel passing through them is the only thing standing between smooth operation and metal grinding directly against metal.
No Lubrication at the Point That Matters Most
Common-rail diesel injection systems operate at pressures of 1,600 to 2,500 bar — pressure levels where even a small reduction in lubricity translates into rapid, severe wear. Paraffin’s significantly lower lubricity compared to genuine diesel means the high-pressure pump and injectors are essentially running dry, or close to it, every single time the adulterated blend passes through them.
Metal-to-Metal Contact Where There Shouldn’t Be Any
Without an adequate lubricating film, the precision metal surfaces inside the pump and injectors — machined to tolerances measured in microns — begin making direct contact with each other under load. This is quite literally the engine grinding its own internal metal down, cycle after cycle, every time the vehicle runs on the adulterated fuel.
Progressive, Then Sudden, Failure
This wear doesn’t necessarily announce itself immediately. A vehicle can run on paraffin-adulterated diesel for a period showing only minor symptoms — slightly rougher running, marginally reduced power — while internal wear accumulates silently. Eventually, the wear crosses a threshold, and the failure becomes catastrophic and sudden: a seized high-pressure pump, a destroyed set of injectors, or in severe cases, an engine that seizes entirely and requires full replacement rather than repair.
